wedding timeline for Puerto Vallarta

When planning a destination wedding on the Mexican Pacific coast, one of the most common questions couples ask me is: “Jorge, why do we need 8 hours of photography coverage if the reception is only 4 hours long?” It’s a completely fair question! Before the music starts and the tequila flows, there is a whole universe of beautiful, emotional moments happening behind the scenes. From the morning mimosas with your bridesmaids to that nervous, excited energy right before walking down the aisle, the story of your wedding day starts way before the party does.

As a wedding photographer, I always include custom timeline suggestions in my coverage packages. Aligning your schedule with the local sunset, venue, and guest count is the absolute secret weapon to a stress-free wedding day and gorgeous, golden-hour photos.

Here’s a generic timeline I created that works perfect for an 8-hour coverage, which is my most popular wedding package. However, destination weddings come in all shapes and sizes! Whether you need a shorter 6-hour coverage for a more intimate elopement, or up to 10 hours to capture every single second of an epic after-party, I’ve got you covered. No matter which option you choose, I will personally help you design a custom timeline that perfectly fits the vision and flow of your wedding day.

A Realistic 8-Hour Mexico Destination Wedding Timeline

· 2:00 PM – Bride’s Final Touches & Getting Ready: Hair is already done, makeup artist is applying the final touches. This is the perfect time for candid photos in matching pajamas, a champagne toast with your girls, and capturing those beautiful bridal details.

· 2:35 PM – Groom Getting Ready: The guys suit up, share a quick laugh, and maybe toast with a shot of local tequila to ease the nerves. (Note: Read below on why these getting-ready times are scheduled at different hours!)

· 3:00 PM – Putting the Dress On: The emotional moment when the dress goes on, jewelry is styled, and the bridal look comes together.

· 3:30 PM – The First Look & Formal Couple Session: (More on why this is a game-changer below!)

· 4:00 PM – Family & Bridal Party Pictures: Getting these done before the ceremony means you get to join your cocktail hour later without rushing!

· 4:40 PM – Freshen Up: A quick break to hide from arriving guests, touch up makeup, and catch your breath.

· 5:00 PM – Ceremony Starts: The big moment under the warm Mexican sky.

· 5:30 PM – Cocktail Hour: Guests enjoy drinks and appetizers while transitioning into party mode.

· 6:30 PM – Guests Seated & Sunset Photos: While guests find their seats, we sneak away for 20 minutes to capture those epic, glowing sunset portraits on the beach.

· 6:50 PM – Grand Entrance & First Dance: Entering the reception straight into your first dance while the energy is high.

· 7:00 PM – Dinner is Served: Time to enjoy the incredible local cuisine.

· 7:20 PM – Toasts & Speeches: Heartfelt words from your closest family and friends during dinner.

· 8:00 PM – Dance Floor Opens: The party officially kicks off!

· 10:00 PM – Photography Coverage Concludes: The perfect wrap-up to capture the wild energy of the dance floor.

The Getting-Ready Dynamic: Solo Photographer vs. Second Shooter

You might have noticed in the timeline above that the Bride and Groom getting-ready sessions are staggered rather than happening at the exact same time. There is a very important, strategic reason for this!

I personally specialize in intimate boutique weddings, typically around 60 guests. Because of the intimate size of these celebrations, I usually shoot alone.

To make sure I don’t miss a single detail, I design the schedule so I can spend time capturing the bridal prep first, and then head over to cover the groom and his guys right after. It allows the day to flow naturally without me having to be in two places at once.

However, what if you both want to get ready at the exact same time? That is where a second photographer comes in. If you decide to add a second shooter to your package, we can easily sync your getting-ready schedules. One photographer will be dedicated entirely to the bride’s room while the other covers the groom’s side simultaneously. This is a fantastic option if your getting-ready locations are far apart or if you want to condense the morning timeline.

The Sunset Factor: Why Your Month Matters

While this timeline is an amazing blueprint, there is one major variable you need to consider when getting married in the Puerto Vallarta area: the sun.

Unlike other destinations, the sunset time here shifts drastically depending on the time of year. For instance, if you are getting married in December or January, the sun sets around 6:15 PM, meaning your ceremony should ideally start around 4:30 PM. However, if you are planning a summer or late spring wedding in May or June, the sun doesn’t set until nearly 8:00 PM!

When we work together, we will adjust this exact blueprint based on your specific wedding date and venue coordinates to make sure we lock in that perfect golden light.

Why a “First Look” Will Save Your Wedding Timeline

You probably noticed that in the blueprint above, we schedule the couple’s portraits and bridal party photos before the ceremony. This is only possible if you choose to do a First Look.

Opting for a First Look is one of the best logistical decisions you can make for a beach wedding, and here is why:

True Alone Time: It gives you a private, intimate moment to see each other, cry, laugh, and connect without a hundred eyes watching you at the altar.

Maximize Your Party: By getting family and bridal party photos out of the way early, you actually get to attend your own cocktail hour, mingle with your guests, and drink that first margarita.

No Light Stress: If your ceremony runs late (which happens often!), you won’t have to worry about losing daylight for your main couple photos.
